Critical incident stress management can be thought of as one of the most important psychological tools for people in the modern world--and not only the modern business world, but also in the typical modern personal life.

Critical incident stress management techniques are so important not because our society has become more stressed out than any previous society--as a matter of fact, it's merely a myth that that's how it is. However, modern lifestyles and the particular modern stresses that people experience, along with the fact that working women have taken on many more of the stresses that were once almost exclusively male-related stress factors, have caused a loss of insight into how to cope with stress correctly or effectively. This is why there are so many professional grief counselors these days.

Critical Incident Stress Management is a peer-driven technique intended to assist people to deal with cause-specific and recognizable emotional trauma caused by a critical incident, usually in the immediate aftermath of that critical incident. One of the most important objectives of critical incident stress management is to avoid individual post-traumatic stress disorder.

Critical incidents are events that deliver such a shock to our personal system that we literally do not know how to respond to it, and ways in which we have previously been able to successfully deal with high stress situations do not work, thrusting us into a state of confusion that can possibly bring about self-destructive behaviors which could have dire or long-term ramifications.

Critical incident stress management is extremely important to the health and well-being of a business or workplace when professional or personal crises have stricken one or more employees. Not just the health of the individuals, but the vitality and continued productivity of the business are put at risk when a critical incident visits its stressful effects upon the people at that business. A swift return to individual normalcy of routine and habit is a vital goal of the management techniques.
